Each year the Institute hosts a Thanksgiving Benefit taught by Janet MacLeod. This year will be a special class as it will be dedicated to the memory of Mary Frances Chan a friend of Janet’s and dedicated student of Iyengar Yoga. Here are some reflections from Janet:

“Mary passed away on October 24, 2014. She was 79. She was a graduate of iyisf and got her IYNAUS Introductory Certification at 76 years old. She was a very avid supporter of Iyengar Yoga. Whether she was walking in the park or purchasing a pair of shoes she would be enthusiastically explaining the benefits of Iyengar yoga to one and all. I would like to dedicate the benefit workshop I am doing on Thanksgiving  Day for Scholarships to her as it was her desire to make yoga accessible to everyone. She had her own studio in Sacramento. It is called Gen-Nih Yoga.  -Janet MacLeod

This benefit is special to Janet’s heart as she has always been a strong proponent of making yoga available to everyone through free and donation-based classes. Our goal for this event is to raise $3,000 which will fund one full scholarship or several partial scholarship to qualified students in the Institute’s 2015 program.

We are excited to announce students from IYISF’s teacher training program will be leading a 6 session class titled “Morning Yoga for Sitters” co-sponsored by the San Francisco Zen Center. Mentored by one of our Faculty members  Shosan Victoria Austin; Theresa Marks, James Terburg and Ruchi Murlidhar will lead the class.  This class will help you start your morning on a positive note and teach you how to cultivate a yoga practice while sitting.


When: Wednesdays, 7:30 – 8:15 a.m. 12/17, 24, 31 and 1/7, 14, and 21
Location: at the 308 Page Conference Center

What are the elements of a stable, upright sitting posture? How do we cultivate the yoga of sitting?

Co-sponsored by San Francisco Zen Center and the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco as part of a rigorous 500-hour Iyengar teacher training, this special 6-week series will include a wide variety of yoga poses that build strength, flexibility, and composure for seated practices. Participants will learn how to use daily yoga practice to take care of body and mind for sitting. Please wear comfortable clothing that exposes elbows and knees, and come with an empty stomach.

Fee: Donations are gratefully accepted at each session. Please give generously to support San Francisco Zen Center’s programs.
